Egypt, USAID and WHO probe bolstering joint cooperation

Minister of Health and Population Khaled Abdel Ghaffar received on Monday Director of the US Agency for International Development (USAID) Mission for Egypt Leslie Reed and the World Health Organization (WHO)’s Representative in Egypt Naeema Al Gasseer at the headquarters of the Health Ministry in El Alamein city.

The meeting touched on means of fostering bilateral cooperation and supporting the Egyptian health sector.

Abdel Ghaffar expressed Egypt’s appreciation for its continued cooperation with USAID in the health sector, which he said was demonstrated during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The health minister pointed out that joint action will be intensified in the coming years as regards the population increase file and through programs offered by the Decent Life Initiative and the Universal Health Insurance System.

Abdel Ghaffar also expressed thanks and appreciation to the role played by the WHO office in Egypt, pointing out to the success Egypt has achieved in eliminating the Hepatitis C virus and the country’s ability to deal with the COVID-19 outbreak.

He affirmed his aspiration to maintain constant cooperation with WHO as regards a number of key files and future challenges, especially with Egypt hosting the upcoming UN Climate Change Conference (COP27) in November.

During the meeting, the health minister announced the initiation of a grant offered by USAID to Cairo within the framework of tripartite cooperation among the health ministry, the US agency, and WHO.

The grant is set to support Egyptian health-related activities and files with a view to improving the country’s health services.
