Egypt Has Been Striving to Reach a GERD Agreement for over 10 years: President El-Sisi

President Abdel-Fattah El-Sisi asserted on Wednesday 11/9/2024 that Egypt has no source of water other than the Nile River.

Ethiopia has been building on one of its tributaries its controversial dam, known as the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD).

The river ‘has flowed for thousands of years without obstacles,’ El-Sisi said in a joint press conference with German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier, who is on his first official visit to Egypt.

El-Sisi discussed with Steinmeier the Nile water file, including the dispute caused by the GERD, highlighting the negotiations with Ethiopia to reach a binding legal agreement regarding filling and operating the dam.

‘For more than 10 years, we have been striving to reach an agreement in accordance with international standards and laws governing Trans Boundary Rivers,’ he said.

Egypt, which relies mainly on the Nile for its water needs, fears that the GERD will harm the country’s already scarce water supply.
