Al-Asabaa: The Prime Minister of the Government of National Unity, Abdul Hamid Dabaiba, has sent a high-level government team to the municipality of Al-Asabaa, located southwest of Tripoli, to investigate a series of unexplained fires that have erupted in citizens’ homes across the region.
According to Libyan News Agency, the team, led by the Minister of Local Government, the Head of the National Safety Authority, and the Head of the Criminal Investigation Department, has been tasked with closely monitoring the fire incidents. The Prime Minister has instructed these officials to bolster the efforts of specialized teams that have been addressing the situation from the onset. Additionally, the team is expected to determine the causes of the fires and compile a comprehensive report on the incident’s developments.
The directive from the Prime Minister follows alarming reports of recurring and enigmatic fires in several homes in Al-Asabaa. These fires have mysteriously ignited without any apparent cause, resulting in significant destruction of properties and instilling fear among local residents.
A statement from the municipality of Al-Asabaa, released on Monday, highlighted the severity of the situation, describing it as a disaster that has persisted for two days. The fires have reportedly destroyed approximately 20 homes, with the causes still unidentified. The municipality has called for a thorough investigation and urged for the enhancement of firefighting capabilities, including additional fire engines and improved support for firefighting teams.
Visual evidence shared on social media platforms has depicted the extensive damage caused by the fires, showing flames leaping from one house to another.
The mayor of Al-Asabaa, a city with a population of 65,000, voiced his frustration over the inadequate firefighting resources. He revealed that the city relies on a single firefighting vehicle, despite repeated requests to the National Safety Authority for more equipment, which have so far gone unanswered.
