Committee Reviews Conditions of Libyan Prisoners Abroad

Tripoli: The committee concerned with the situation of Libyan prisoners abroad continues to follow up on their cases to strengthen their rights and improve their conditions. The committee tasked with monitoring and documenting the conditions of Libyans imprisoned abroad discussed the cases and files related to Libyan citizens detained outside the country, examining the legal and humanitarian aspects and exploring effective ways to follow up on them to ensure the protection of their rights and the improvement of their conditions. According to Libyan News Agency, during its meeting today at the House of Representatives headquarters, the committee reviewed updated statistics on the situation of Libyans imprisoned abroad. The number of cases under review reached 298 prisoners, of whom 113 have been released, and verdicts have been issued in 128 cases, in addition to two cases of deportation. The official spokesperson for the House of Representatives, Abdullah Blihaq, noted that verdicts have been issued for the release of 47 prisoners and the deportation of 18 citizens, while emphasizing that some cases are still being processed and followed up on. The committee emphasized the importance of strengthening communication and coordination with Libyan embassies abroad, and the necessity of officially and regularly informing the Attorney General and the Speaker of the House of Representatives of developments in these cases, and taking the necessary measures to expedite their resolution and guarantee the rights of Libyan citizens abroad. Furthermore, the committee agreed to hold a joint meeting with the Attorney General and Ibrahim Bushnaf, head of the committee tasked by the parliament with monitoring the conditions of prisoners and prisons, to discuss mechanisms for joint coordination and unifying efforts to address these cases comprehensively and effectively. It is worth noting that the committee concerned with monitoring and documenting the conditions of Libyans imprisoned abroad was formed by House of Representativ es Resolution No. (62) of 2025.
