Cairo: The League of Arab States has announced its commitment to ramp up its engagements with various Libyan factions, relevant Arab nations, and the United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) with the aim of fostering consensus and advancing the political process in Libya.
According to Libyan News Agency, the Arab League released a statement confirming its close monitoring of recent developments in Libya's political landscape, particularly highlighting the significance of the recent '4+4' mini-meeting. Participants of this meeting signed an agreement on August 30 in Tripoli, which marks the initial steps towards implementing the first two phases of a political roadmap facilitated by UNSMIL. The League was represented at the signing ceremony through its office in the Libyan capital.
The League elaborated that these initiatives are designed to bolster reconciliation and close the gaps between Libyan factions, ultimately setting the stage for a transition to a more stable period. The statement underscored the imperative of ending the division within Libya, unifying its institutions, and achieving key political and electoral goals.
Emphasizing the importance of a "Libyan-led and Libyan-owned" political process, the Arab League stressed the necessity for broad national consensus to ensure Libya's unity, sovereignty, and territorial integrity.
