Answer – VP/HR – EUNAVFOR Med's Operation Sophia – E-004203/2016

Since its establishment a year ago, Operation EUNAVFOR MED Sophia (ENFM) has developed a good awareness of the smugglers’ networks and business model.

In a letter to the HR/VP dated 21 May 2016, Libyan Prime Minister Sarraj invited the EU to present proposals on its contribution to the training of the security service, naval forces and coast guard.

In this context, the recent review process of Operation EUNAVFOR MED Sophia has led the European Council to extend its mandate by one year and to add two supporting tasks. In addition to its core objective, ENFM has indeed been formally authorised by the Council at the 20 June 2016 FAC to provide training to the Libyan Coastguard and Navy and to contribute to the implementation of the UN arms embargo on the High Seas off the coast of Libya, on the basis of UNSC Resolution 2292.
