Tripoli, The United States, Britain, France, Germany and Italy announced today, Thursday, their refusal to make any changes that would disrupt the Libyan elections scheduled for next December 24, stressing the need for the Libyan authorities to commit to facilitating the democratic process on time.
The five countries said in a joint statement about the importance of supporting Libyan institutions to prepare for the elections on time.
The statement indicated that Security Council Resolution No. 2570 called on the Libyan authorities and institutions, including the Government of National Unity and the House of Representatives, to facilitate the elections of December 24, 2021, and to agree on the constitutional base and the legal basis for the elections by July 1, 2021.
The statement emphasized that in addition to the political and security arrangements, technical and logistical preparations are important and essential, indicating that countries believe that the present time is not the right time to make any changes that would disrupt the relevant bodies, which have a fundamental role in preparing for the elections, during the timetable. As determined by Security Council Resolution No. (2570).
