Tripoli: The First Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Fawzi Al-Nuwairi, has made an urgent call for parliamentary elections, viewing them as the sole remedy to restore legitimacy, unify state institutions, and resolve the ongoing institutional division in the country.
According to Libyan News Agency, Al-Nuwairi’s statement, titled “A Call to Save the Nation,” was published on Wednesday. In it, he emphasized that urgent parliamentary elections are crucial to restoring legitimacy, unifying state institutions, reinforcing independent national decision-making, and preventing further foreign interventions. He cited the recent municipal council elections as evidence of Libyans’ desire to choose their representatives freely and as proof of national institutions’ capability to conduct fair elections despite existing challenges.
Al-Nuwairi expressed concern over obstacles created by parties benefiting from the current situation who aim to delay elections to maintain their interests, consequently prolonging the suffering of the Libyan people. He also criticized the role of the UN mission in Libya, describing it as a tool that perpetuates the crisis by reproducing the same bodies and exacerbating division. He called for a national effort to resist any form of external guardianship.
Furthermore, Al-Nuwairi urged all officials to fulfill their national and historical responsibilities and called on the High National Elections Commission to commence the necessary procedures to ensure the elections proceed without delay.
Concluding his statement, Al-Nuwairi appealed to the Libyan people to exercise their right to select their representatives and to resist any attempts to hinder the elections or enforce a political reality that does not reflect their aspirations. He stressed that Libya’s national will is paramount and is the ultimate solution to the country’s challenges.
