Al-Mangoush participates in the session of the Peace and Security Council of the African Union on national reconciliation in Libya

Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation Najla Al-Mangoush participated in the virtual meeting of the Peace and Security Council session of the African Union, which was held today via the Zoom platform at the level of foreign ministers, on national reconciliation in Libya.

In her speech, Al-Mangoush referred to the unfortunate events experienced in Sudan, saying that “the disruption of the path of dialogue between the Sudanese parties is being paid for by civilians today, and that what is required is an immediate cessation of the battles and a response to the peace and settlement initiatives put forward by the Arab and African brothers for a ceasefire and the resumption of the political process.” .

The Minister also expressed her “confidence in the African role in Libya, and the awareness of the details and complexities of the national reconciliation file,” praising the role of the envoy of the Chairman of the Committee, “John Claude”, and the Director of the Office of the Chairperson of the African Union Commission, “Hassan Labat” for their unremitting efforts in this file.

She said, “We dealt with the issue of reunifying Libyans and completing all the important issues towards the transition to the stage of permanent stability, as it is a historical and national responsibility that we will not abandon.”

The Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation affirmed that “the results of the preparatory forum for national reconciliation organized by the Presidential Council in January 2023 provided a clear understanding about the requirements of the stage in the next preparation for the national conference for reconciliation inside Libya, and according to a national vision and will.”

Al-Mangoush also praised the efforts of the Presidential Council and the Government of National Unity, in providing a real ground for the success of this endeavor, and noted the vital role played by the head of the United Nations Support and Advice Mission to Libya, Abdullah Batili, in his dealings with the issue of national reconciliation, where he held many meetings with the components of the Libyan society, most notably the sponsorship of the meetings of the Joint Military Committee (5 + 5), which were held in Tripoli and Benghazi, as well as his visit to the city of Sebha, which contributes to strengthening confidence, supporting the political process, and emphasizing that the dialogue is Libyan-Libyan and within Libya as a complement to reconciliation efforts, patriotism, reparation, and moving forward with holding elections in a way that contributes to supporting security and stability efforts in the country.

Al-Mangoush stressed that Libya continues to play its humanitarian role, despite the exceptional circumstances it is going through, in order to mitigate and face the difficult conditions facing illegal immigrants, as the national institutions respond quickly in dealing with all situations, noting the continuation of cooperation and coordination with the African Federation, and tripartite work team in the voluntary deportation program to their countries or to a third country.

At the end of her speech, the Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation praised “the role of the Security and Peace Council in Africa in supporting the political process in Libya, and the role of the high-level African Commission in achieving national reconciliation in Libya, and the efforts of Libya’s neighboring countries, as well as the exceptional efforts of Batili, stressing that the concerned authorities in Libya are working intensively to achieve this merit and to hold elections during this year.
