Al Lafi Underscores Commitment To Elections At Meeting With UN Envoy.

Tripoli, Member of Presidency Council Abdullah Al Lafi reviewed with the UN Special Envoy to Libya Jan Kupis the steps that the Council has taken to ensure that elections held without hindrance, including re-opening the coastal highway via the Military Commission 5+5, which is in its final stage, exchange of prisoners on both sides, withdrawal of mercenaries and foreign forces, in addition to national reconciliation effort which he said will carry the country through.

This came at meeting Al Lafi held with Kupis here on Monday, during which the two reviewed latest developments in Libya, in regard to the Berlin 2 Conference, and the fact that all are united that elections be held on set time, and the failure of the Dialogue Forum in Geneva to agree on the constitutional basis for the Dec. 24 elections. It also dealt with the steps taken by 5+5 to re-open the coastal highway and the situation in the southern region.

Al Lafi commended the effort of the UN Support Mission in Libya, stressing importance of holding the elections on set time, explaining that the Council was committed to the electoral process.

He also commended the effort of the High National Elections Commission for launching the voter register, stressing need for an agreement inside the 75 Commission on the constitutional basis.
