Tripoli: Military leaders in eastern and western Libya are preparing to collaborate in hosting Flintlock 2026, one of the largest exercises conducted by the US Africa Command (AFRICOM), with participation from countries in Africa and Europe, as stated by the US Embassy in Libya.
According to Libyan News Agency, this joint effort aims to enhance the integration of Libyan military institutions. US Charg© d’Affaires Jeremy Brent remarked in a press statement, following General Dagvin Anderson’s two-day visit to Libya, that the United States seeks to facilitate a unified approach to addressing the challenges facing Libya. AFRICOM, in partnership with the Embassy, is focused on advancing US objectives in Libya and supporting the Libyan people in their quest for unity and lasting peace.
Brent highlighted the appreciation by Libyans for AFRICOM’s role, unique capabilities, and its history of supporting counterterrorism efforts in the country. He emphasized that General Anderson’s visit has reinforced relationships with Libyan partners, and that Anderson’s leadership and engagement in unifying Libyan military and security institutions are critical steps toward peace and stability.
AFRICOM, one of the seven geographic combatant commands of the US Department of Defense, is tasked with overseeing all US military operations, training, security cooperation, and crisis response in Africa, promoting regional security and stability while serving US interests.
During his two-day visit, General Anderson met with Abdul Hamid Dbeibah, the head of the Government of National Accord, in Tripoli, and Field Marshal Khalifa Haftar, commander of the Libyan National Army, in Benghazi. Anderson underscored the importance of dialogue and cooperation among Libyan leaders nationwide, stressing that unity is vital for a peaceful and prosperous Libya.
General Anderson’s discussions with Libyan leaders addressed security concerns and the necessity for collaborative efforts to counter terrorism and organized crime, which threaten Libya’s stability and the broader region. He affirmed the US’s commitment to strengthening relations and building capacity to guide Libyans toward stability and prosperity, supporting a Libyan-led political process.
The statement further noted that Anderson emphasized the importance of enhancing security and economic integration as essential elements for ensuring Libya’s long-term sovereignty and prosperity, which will reinforce the political process.
