Tripoli: The 5+5 Joint Military Commission (JMC) has reiterated its unwavering commitment to implementing the ceasefire agreement between Libyan parties, as the country marks the fifth anniversary of the agreement’s signing on October 23, 2020, under the guidance of the United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL).
According to Libyan News Agency, the JMC issued a statement reflecting on the significance of the agreement, which has been pivotal in Libya’s journey towards peace and stability. The commission emphasized that the agreement is founded on crucial principles, such as the unity of Libya’s territories, protection of its borders across land, sea, and air, and the rejection of external influences on national decisions.
The statement further highlighted the agreement’s success in halting the bloodshed, preserving civil peace, and fostering a spirit of tolerance among Libyans. It underscored the fact that the agreement remains effective without major violations, largely due to the diligence of the JMC’s subcommittees.
Despite challenges posed by political divisions and a stalled electoral process, the JMC noted that fulfilling the agreement’s terms remains a national priority for Libyans. The commission reaffirmed its dedication to executing all aspects of the agreement, including the withdrawal of foreign fighters, the dissolution of armed groups, and the unification of Libya’s military establishment to ensure lasting security and stability.
The ceasefire agreement, signed in Geneva in 2020, called for an immediate and comprehensive ceasefire throughout Libya, the withdrawal of foreign forces within three months, and the suspension of foreign military agreements. It also led to the establishment of the Joint Military Commission (5+5) to oversee the process, as well as the opening of roads and airports, and the exchange of detainees to build confidence, ultimately contributing to military unification and the integration or demobilization of fighters based on national criteria.
