39th AU Summit Commences in Addis Ababa


Addis ababa: The 39th Ordinary Session of the Assembly of Heads of State and Government of the African Union (AU) opened at the AU headquarters in Addis Ababa, the capital of Ethiopia. The summit, spanning two days, gathers leaders from AU member states and is centered around the 2026 theme: “Assuring Sustainable Water Availability and Safe Sanitation Systems to Achieve the Goals of Agenda 2063.”



According to Emirates News Agency, the summit’s agenda extends beyond sustainable water management. Delegates are also addressing issues related to peace and political stability, economic development, regional integration, and efforts aimed at enhancing Africa’s global standing and unity.



The opening session witnessed the participation of African heads of state and government, along with leaders from continental and international organizations. Notable attendees include AU Commission Chairperson Mahmoud Ali Youssouf and UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres.
