Today’s newspapers focus on human trafficking and divisions over the position of Parliament Speaker

Today, Thursday, August 15, newspapers issued in Baghdad focused on the human trafficking file and measures to combat it, and divisions over the vacant parliament presidency.. and other issues.

Regarding the human trafficking file, Al-Zawraa newspaper, which is issued by the Iraqi Journalists Syndicate, conducted an interview with the Director of the Relations and Media Department at the Ministry of Interior, Major General Khaled Al-Mahna, who spoke about the ministry’s procedures to deal with this file.

Al-Mahna said in his interview with the newspaper: “Most countries in the world suffer from the crime of human trafficking, which poses a danger to the individual and society. In Iraq, there is great interest in the file of combating human trafficking according to what was stated in the government program, so the Ministry of Interior paid great and extensive attention to this file.”

He added: “One of the measures taken by the ministry is to link the Directorate of Combating Human Trafficking in the Intelli
gence Agency, considering that it is one of the mysterious crimes, and the ministry provided all support and assistance to the directorate, and there were positive results and great achievements.”

He explained that: “Since the beginning of this year until now, 95 suspects have been arrested for sexual exploitation, 57 suspects for human organ trafficking, 61 suspects for forced labor, 389 suspects for begging, and 26 suspects for other matters, while the number of convicts reached 86 convicted on various charges and sentences.”

He pointed out: “The number of victims of human trafficking is 48 victims and the total number of cases is 646 cases.”

Regarding the drug control file, Major General Al-Mahna explained: “There are qualitative operations by the Drug Control Directorate,” stressing: “One of the important joints that the Drug Control Directorate relies on is intelligence information, as there is a complete system and a very large database in tracking, monitoring and collecting evidence on drug dealers.

As for the newspaper Al-Zaman, it followed the ongoing controversy and disagreement over the position of Speaker of Parliament.

It said in this regard: “Al-Azm and Siyada (Sovereignty) Alliances nominated MP Mahmoud Al-Mashhadani for the Speaker of Parliament after six forces announced their agreement on MP Ziada Al-Janabi to fill the vacant position for months.”

It quoted a joint statement by the two alliances, that their decision comes in response to the efforts of the national forces from the Coordination Framework and the Kurdistan Democratic Party and for the purpose of resolving the problem of electing the Speaker of the House of Representatives and in compliance with the decision of the Federal Court and to avoid falling into constitutional errors.

The newspaper indicated that reports had previously indicated that the head of the Parliamentary Integrity Committee, Ziad al-Janabi, had been nominated for the position of Speaker of Parliament.

The reports confirmed, quoting sources, that “the six b
locs agreed to nominate al-Janabi for the position of Speaker of Parliament, after a movement conducted by the head of the Taqaddim Party, Mohammed al-Halbousi, to resolve the existing problem over this position in light of the widening political divisions.”

Al-Sabah newspaper, issued by the Iraqi Media Network, followed the first meeting of the Industrial Coordination Council, which was held under the chairmanship of Prime Minister Mohammed al-Sudani.

It indicated that Prime Minister Mohammed Shiaa al-Sudani expressed his confidence in the ability of our public and private industrial sector to rise again and meet the requirements of the market and Iraqi citizens, especially after the important partnerships with major industrial countries.

The Prime Minister stressed that “this council is concerned with developing industry and making decisions that would improve the industrial reality,” indicating that “the major markets that will be activated by the Ministry of Trade, in partnership with the private secto
r, will be a place to display local industrial products.” He explained: “The government has diagnosed, since the beginning of its work, the problems related to Iraqi industry, and has launched promising partnerships with the private sector to activate local industry, in addition to important partnerships with major industrial countries such as Japan, Germany, France and others, by covering these activities with sovereign guarantees.”
