Written question – Surveillance of the Mediterranean with Eurosur – E-003212/2018

On 22 October 2013, the Council of the European Union adopted Regulation (EU) No 1052/2013 establishing a European Border Surveillance System (Eurosur). It aims to increase exchanges of information and strengthen operational cooperation between the national authorities of the Member States and with the Frontex Border Agency. By collating various data (‘Fusion Services’), Frontex assembles situational pictures, based, inter alia, on satellite imagery, data from vessel detection systems, meteorological information and intelligence.

1. Which coastal regions in Algeria, Tunisia and Libya are being monitored by EU missions as part of Pre-Frontier Monitoring and which resources are used in this connection?

2. Which other services are due to be developed in the ‘Eurosur Fusion Services’ (EFS), and how will airborne surveillance with manned and unmanned aircraft also be extended?

3. What capabilities and functions does the ‘Large Area Pre-Frontier Monitoring’ service provide for Frontex, and in which regions is this service currently being deployed to create situational pictures?
