Tripoli, The Libyan embassy in the United States of America announced the return of a rare Libyan artifact of the “headed veiled female” that was stolen from the ancient city of Shahat and smuggled to the United States of America.

The embassy indicated, in a statement, that it is proud to announce the return of the artifact to its homeland in Libya, which dates back to the ancient marble ages in the year “350” BC, in the ancient city of Cyrene “Shahat”.

The embassy explained that the return process took place after a report received by the Libyan embassy in Washington from the Antiquities Authority about an attempt to sell the looted artifact. The US investigated the case, which lasted nearly three years, after which the embassy was informed by the Antiquities Trafficking Office of the New York District Attorney of the end of the federal investigations, stopping the sale, and returning the “funeral marble head” to its original homeland.

The embassy confirmed that the ambassador, accompanied by the charge d’Affairs, traveled to New York, where the ceremony of receiving the rare artifact took place on January 12, 2022, and the transfer of the “funeral marble head” to the embassy headquarters in Washington.

The Embassy, on behalf of the people of Libya, expressed its sincere appreciation to the “DA Office” and all those involved in securing the safe process for the return of ancient monuments.
