Warring parties in Libya are being urged by the UN Children’s Fund (UNICEF) to protect children caught in the country’s conflict.

The appeal was made by UNICEF Special Representative in Libya, Ghassan Khalil, following a deadly air strike earlier this week.

The North African country has been embroiled in fighting between rival factions since 2014.

The attack occurred on Tuesday in the oasis town of Sokna, located in central Libya, according to UNICEF.

At least nine civilians, who included women and children, reportedly were killed while 20 others were wounded.

Mr Khalil, the UNICEF official, said the incident took place in a public park, which showed that “even the simple act of playing has become dangerous for the children of Libya.”

UNICEF called on parties to the conflict to protect children from all forms of violence.
