Tripoli, The Ministry of Oil & Gas has strongly denounced remarks by the US Ambassador and Special Envoy to Libya Richard Norland about the National Oil Company, saying they ignored the Ministry and were an intervention in the country’s internal affairs.

In a statement, the Ministry said it got informed about remarks attributed to the US Ambassador to Libya following his meeting with the Chairman of the National Oil Company, expressing its strong denunciation of the remarks being unsuitable to be made by an ambassador of a foreign country.

The Ministry deemed the remarks an intervention in the internal affairs of Libya, and an undermining of the core business of the Ministry of Oil & Gas that leads this important sector.

The Ministry said the Ministry of Oil & Gas is the sole Government body responsible for the oil sector, and the National Oil Company is affiliated to the Ministry, and the remarks of the Ambassador were unacceptable intervention in the Ministry’s work, and therefore in the Libyan internal affairs, in a way that can be construed as an attempt to undermine Government efforts to unify state institutions from which Libyans suffered for years.

The US Ambassador, however, has paid tribute to the Chairman of the National Oil Company Mustafa Sun’Allah for ‘the company’s technical efficiency’ which he described as an important Libyan achievement.
