1. $US 529 new funds raised at donor conference for South Sudan

$US 529 million has been raised at a donor conference for humanitarian aid to millions of South Sudanese people.

UN humanitarian chief Valerie Amos made the announcement after she and American actor Forest Whitaker completed a three-day visit to the civil war-torn country.

The UN estimates that over US$800 million is needed in 2015 to help South Sudanese refugees and host communities in Ethiopia, Kenya, Sudan and Uganda.

2. New round of dialogue expected among key Libyan political parties

A new round of dialogue among key political parties in Libya is expected to take place later this week in the country.

The UN Support Mission in Libya, UNSMIL, says a date and location will be announced based on security considerations.

The talks aim to resolve the nation’s political crisis.

Two rival governments are currently vying for control of the North African oil producer, three years after the fall of leader Muammar al-Qhadafi.

3. Somali Parliament’s approval of new cabinet welcomed by UN

Somalia’s Parliament has approved a new cabinet, a move welcomed by the UN and its partners, including the African Union and European Union.

Many female ministers have been included in the new list, which has been described as a “vital move forward”.

The international partners also condemned the murder on Monday of a Member of Parliament, Abdullahi Qayad Barre, who was killed by armed men in the Somali capital, Mogadishu, while on his way to Parliament.

4. Attack on Sudanese Red Crescent Society condemned

An attack on Sudanese Red Crescent Society staff in Sudan has been strongly condemned by the United Nations.

Three aid workers were killed and one seriously injured in Blue Nile State.

They were part of a team monitoring the distribution of food assistance provided by the UN in Kurmuk locality.
