Motion for a resolution on the Commission’s vague desire to control illegal immigration – B8-2016-0844

The European Parliament,

–  having regard to Rule 133 of its Rules of Procedure,

A.  whereas, in the words of first Vice-President of the Commission, Frans Timmermans, published in Le Monde on 8 June 2016, ‘Europe has ways of controlling immigration’;

1.  Takes the view that the reasons given by Commissioner Timmermans are based on an analysis which is totally out of touch with, and unaware of, the situation: a) the agreement with Turkey b) the Italian ‘migration pact’ c) the EU-Libya agreement d) a legal migration component (based on the German ‘Blue Card’ model);

2.  Calls on the Commission to give up any desire to control illegal immigration and leave the task to the Member States, the only bodies which have been able to demonstrate their efficacy in that area to date.
