BRUSSELS, EU High Representative Federica Mogherini held a phone conversation with the Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov last night and discussed the situation in Libya, Syria, and Ukraine.

A statement released here by her office late Friday said that following Mogherini's meeting with the Libyan Prime Minister Fayez Al-Sarraj on Thursday in Brussels and also in view of the discussion at the EU Foreign Affairs Council next Monday, she discussed with Lavrov the situation in Libya and the perspectives of the political agreement.

On Syria, Lavrov briefed Mogherini on the recent talks in Astana and the EU foreign policy chief informed the minister of the European initiative with the regional players and on the upcoming Brussels conference on the future of Syria.

Mogherini and Lavrov spoke at length about the escalation of violence in eastern Ukraine. Mogherini stressed the need to stop fighting immediately, and to work for a full implementation of the Minsk agreements.

They agreed to meet in the coming weeks, added the statement.
