Barcelona, The 6th Regional Forum of Foreign Ministers of the Union for the Mediterranean expressed its support for international and regional efforts in favour of the political process in Libya, including holding presidential and parliamentary elections on time.
This came in the final statement issued after the meeting of foreign ministers of the Union for the Mediterranean, during the 6th Regional Forum, which was held on Monday in Barcelona, Spain, with the participation of foreign ministers and representatives of the member states of the Union, in the presence of officials from the European Union and representatives of regional organizations, bodies and institutions of society Civil and institutions financing Union projects in the Mediterranean region.
The statement indicated that these efforts “support the Libyan-led and owned political process under the auspices of the United Nations, with the aim of achieving a political solution to the Libyan crisis, on the basis of the Libyan road map and relevant Security Council resolutions, including resolutions 2570 and 2571.”
The statement added that this political solution “preserves the unity, sovereignty and territorial integrity of Libya, stops all foreign interference, and achieves national reconciliation and sustainable peace and stability.”
In this regard, the importance of holding presidential and parliamentary elections, on December 24, and the need to implement the October 23, 2020 ceasefire agreement, including the agreed comprehensive plan of action that leads to the complete withdrawal of all foreign forces, foreign fighters and mercenaries from Libyan territory, was stressed.
In their statement, the foreign ministers of the Union for the Mediterranean stressed the need to strengthen efforts to resolve the long-standing conflicts and crises that deprive the region of its right to peace and stability.
