Foreign Minister discusses regional developments with Iranian counterpart, calls for unifying efforts to cease fire in Lebanon


Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs, Fuad Hussein, met today, Thursday, with Iranian Foreign Minister, Abbas Araqchi, on the sidelines of the 79th session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York.

During the meeting, bilateral relations between Iraq and Iran were discussed, and the importance of the recent visit of the Iranian President and his accompanying delegation to Baghdad, which represented an important station to enhance cooperation between the two countries.

The two sides also reviewed the recent developments in the region, especially in Lebanon, where the seriousness of these developments and the ramifications they may cause on the regional and international arena were pointed out.

The two Ministers stressed that the catastrophic humanitarian and economic consequences, in addition to the direct security effects, threaten international security and peace.

The two parties agreed on the need to unify efforts and positions, especially at the Islamic level, in order to pre
ssure for an immediate ceasefire in Lebanon.

The two ministers pointed to the failure and lack of adequate response by international mechanisms specialized in dealing with armed conflicts and acts of aggression, stressing the importance of the UN Security Council carrying out its duties in this regard.

Fouad Hussein also discussed Iraq’s proposal submitted to the Arab Group, which calls for holding an Arab and Islamic summit aimed at mobilizing international support for a ceasefire in Lebanon.

The Minister stressed that Iraq will continue to follow up on this proposal in the coming days to achieve the convening of this summit.
