CAIRO, Feb 20 — Egyptian President Abdelfatah Al-Sisi said Thursday the recent air attack on Libya was precise and targeted the positions of the ISIL terrorists specifically.

The blood of the 21 innocent Egyptian Coptic Christians who were killed in Libya could not go in vain, Egyptian presidential spokesman Alaa Yusuf quoted Al-Sisi as saying during his meeting with editors in chief of newspapers from the Nile Basin and southern African countries.

Al-Sisi affirmed the resolve to counter the attempts of some people to justify killing in the name of religion and jihad (holy war) which is totally untrue.

He pointed out that the Egyptian army defends the interests and national security of the country and contributes against all threats foremost among which is terrorism.

He reaffirmed Egypt’s commitment to consultation and cooperation with the member countries of the Arab League and the African Union (AU), noting that the process to build confidence among the Nile Basin countries made big strides in the recent years.

He added that there are a lot of promising opportunities for cooperation in such areas as energy, commerce, investment and riverine shipping which could link the Nile Basin countries to the Mediterranean basin ones.

On the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD or the Millennium Dam) being built on the Blue Nile River, Al-Sisi said Egypt and Ethiopia reached understanding on the concerns of each other.

Egypt recognizes Ethiopia’s right to economic development while Ethiopia realizes the vital importance of the River Nile as the sole source of drinkable water for Egypt, he said, referring to the outcome of his meeting with Ethiopian Prime Minister Hailemariam Desalegn at the AU summit in Malabo, capital of Equatorial Guinea, in last June.
