ALGIERS, -- Algerian Minister of Maghreb, African Union (AU) and Arab League Affairs, Abdelkader Messahel, says Algeria and the United States have "convergent views" concerning the help and support to provide to the Libyan Presidential Council as the only representative of Libya.

"There is convergence of views between the Algerian and US Presidents (Abdelaziz Bouteflika and Barack Obama) about the help and the support to provide to the Libyan Presidential Council as the only representative of Libya," Messahel told Algerian national radio following his meeting in Vienna Monday with Anne W. Patterson, the US Assistant Secretary of State for Near Eastern Affairs.

The two officials met on the sidelines of the 2nd Ministerial Conference on Libya, chaired by US Secretary of State John Kerry and Italian Minister of Foreign Affairs Paolo Gentiloni.

Underlining that the Libyan Council needs help, Messahel said: "We all agree that any party working for Libyan stability must participate in the dialogue."

Patterson said the "Algerian government is ready to play an important role in the region, notably in terms of the training of the military force and the police (in Libya)".

She added that Algeria "has played a strategic role in Libya, African and in the Middle East" and affirmed that Algeria remained an important partner of the US in the region, highlighting its role in the settlement of several crises and the support to the peace processes.

Meanwhile, Messahel is taking part in the 1st Italian-African Conference being held Tuesday and Wednesday in Rome, the Foreign Affairs Ministry said in a statement here.

This conference, an Italian initiative, is aimed at "setting up a strategic partnership between Italy and the African continent in sectors of common interest like economic development, through the development of infrastructures, agriculture, social and environmental sustainability and migration."

The participants will discuss issues related to peace and security, particularly in Africa.

Messahel will present Algeria's views in a speech on "Preserving Peace and Strengthening and Consolidation of Institutions in Africa".
