ABANTU for Development, an NGO which focus is enhancing women’s place in policy making and governance as well as empowering women leaders in peace building has boost women hopes of securing more Assembly membership places with a campaign support for the aspirants in Techiman.
The NGO in Techiman is currently in collaboration with the Techiman Municipal Assembly, the Information Services Department, the Gender Desk Officer of the Assembly and ASTA FM, a private radio station in supporting the women’s candidates.
In Techiman Municipality where only five (5) women candidates are contesting, the Information Service Department Cinema Van is working with the women candidates in their electoral areas to sensitize the electorates on their policies and campaign messages.
The Van gave the women’s aspirants the opportunity to directly contact and interact with electorates in the various communities to deliver their campaign messages as well as introduce themselves to the people.
The aspirants for Techiman south include Saratu Issah, for Konimase electoral area; Comfort Anima, Tunsuasi electoral area; Harriet Danso, Tanoso-Ahenfie electoral area, Asiata Kusi, Akisimasu electoral area and Rejoice Naadu Nunoo of Nkrankrom electoral area.
ASTA FM, as a part of the collaboration has also allocated airtime from their Morning Show programme known as “Kokrookoo”, for the women to campaign and deliver their messages to the people.
In the Techiman North District, similar activities are also going on to boost the strength of the women aspirants to compete favourably with their male contenders.
The beneficiaries of the support in the Techiman North District include Alice Frimpong Acheampong for Ntoase/Abease electoral area; Elizabeth Akua Saah for Offuman-Dampaso; Vida Pomaa for Tuobodom Adantase and Korsah Cecilia for Tuobodom-Adutwie electoral areas.
Mrs. Julian Harrison Mutaah, the Gender Desk Officer for the Techiman Municipal Assembly in an interview said ABANTU’s main thematic area of work is gender and governance.
She observed that its establishment, the organization has had vision of a world where empowered women and men can work together to address gender inequalities and promote a transformational leadership and development for a just society.
She added that there were a number of programmes targeted to ensure an effective and increased participation of women in the governance process, and the support for the women’s aspirants for the 2015 Assembly elections was just one of them.
