Newspaper Editor Gunned Down in Libya [press release]

A newspaper editor has been shot dead in the centre of Benghazi, Libya, according to medics.

Meftah Bouzid, editor of the weekly newspaper Burniq and prominent critic of armed groups, was gunned down on Monday.

A friend said that Bouzid’s frequent television appearances criticising Islamic fighters had resulted in him receiving death threats.

The security situation for journalists in Libya has become increasingly precarious as rival groups attempt to exert their control over media houses and silence opponents. Media outlets have been subjected to attacks, and the general situation for media freedom continues to deteriorate.

Doha Centre for Media Freedom expresses condolences to the family of Meftah Bouzid and calls for a full investigations into the circumstances surrounding his death. It is essential for the development of the media in Libya for steps to be taken to improve safety conditions for journalists and to work towards eradicating impunity.
