Libya’s Supreme Court Rules PM’s Election Invalid

Libya’s Supreme Court rejected on Monday the Islamist-led parliament’s appointment of Ahmed Maiteeq as new prime minister.

The Supreme Constitutional Court declared Prime Minister Ahmed Maiteea’s appointment unconstitutional, but gave no further details or instructions.

The country has, in effect, had two premiers since Maiteeq’s disputed appointment after a chaotic vote in parliament, as his predecessor Abdullah al-Thinni refused to hand over power.

Maiteea said he is stepping down to comply with the ruling.
